The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a private 501(c)(3) organization, classifies the Shadows on the Teche as a distinctive destination in downtown New Iberia. The Shadows on the Teche is a classic revival-style, antebellum home that tells the story of the individuals enslaved on the property as well as the Weeks family who owned the property from 1834 to 1958.

As a part of the community in historic downtown New Iberia, Shadows on the Teche is the host of several annual events like the Plein Air Competition and the Shadows Arts & Crafts Fair. They also host educational lectures, series, and family-friendly events for residents in Iberia Parish. The Shadows offers an exciting, educational experience by hosting field trips for students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

In 2022, The Iberia African American Historical Society Center for Research and Learning (IAAHS) opened on second floor of the Shadows Visitor Center. The IAAHS mission is to research, preserve, educate and commemorate the true and inclusive history in Iberia Parish. They maintain both a physical and digital archive and offer events and provide featured exhibits and collections of the history of the area. Tours can be made by appointment only to visit the IAAHS.

The Shadows Visitor Center is located across the street from the historic home at 320 E. Main Street in New Iberia. Tours of the home and gardens are available on Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Guided tours occur at 10:30 am and 2:00 pm. Group tours are available for groups of 10 or more and can be booked outside of normal operation hours. The Shadows on the Teche is closed on major holidays. Please call to confirm tour availability before heading out.
